Campus Spotlight: Civitae At Longwood University

A key component of our Virginia Higher Education Impact Agenda is Solving Problems and Strengthening Communities, which focuses on preparing the next generation of contributing citizens and problem-solving leaders who can bridge differences and help make our communities, commonwealth, and country stronger.

Longwood University is already putting this idea into action through its Civitae core curriculum. Civitae challenges Longwood students to connect what they learn in the classroom to the responsibilities of citizenship and community leadership. The result is graduates who are not only ready for careers, but prepared to engage, lead, and contribute in meaningful ways beyond campus.

This fall, VBHEC helped convene a conversation at Longwood University with campus leadership and students, including Alyssa Malcolm ’27 and Ryan Childress ’26. See some photos from our event below:

The discussion highlighted the impact of Civitae’s Brock Experiences – immersive courses across the country that build real-world skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving by engaging students in complex civic issues.
